In order to contextualize the issue of LGBTQ rights, an image such as this could be useful. Students need to understand that there are parts of the world where homosexuality is punishable by death, and how they live in a (purportedly) privileged area.
This could lead to discussion about how students feel about the LGBTQ rights in their country. If marriage is allowed, does that mean everyone is equal? Or does more have to be done? Do the countries with the death penalty still have LGBTQ populations? Why do they punish homosexuality by death?
These discussions are politically charged and it is important to frame the discussion in a way which does not serve as a platform for the bias or viewpoint of the teacher, but focuses on the engagement of students with the material in meaningful ways. While this material is essential for students to understand, it needs administrative support and permission.
