Gender-Responsive Texts for an English Classroom

Image result for rethinking normal

As an English/Drama teacher at the Secondary level, I have the opportunity to shape the material in my classroom to represent the students who engage with it. In choosing texts, both for curriculum and for my classroom library, I have the opportunity to ensure all of my students see their own gender identities represented in meaningful ways. The use of gender-responsive texts, and the mere presence of them in my classroom, will further signal to my students that my classroom is a safe and inclusive space.

To this end, I have included in this post an extensive annotated bibliography of a variety of texts (novels, movies, poetry, songs, plays, etc.) that address gender in a positive manner. This bibliography was created as a joint venture between Edmonton Public Schools, and the Edmonton Public Library and it contains texts that are suitable for learners from K-12, so has a very broad scope of information.

It is important to acknowledge these texts will be useful whether or not I have gender nonconforming students in my class. While gender-nonconforming students will find solidarity in the viewpoints they contain, gender-conforming students will benefit from being exposed the wide range of experiences and viewpoints they express.
