Welcoming Difference Statement
It is important to actively ensure that transgender and gender nonbinary students feel welcome in your classroom. This can be done by putting posters up on the walls with statements of solidarity.
My "Welcoming Difference" statement is:
THIS CLASSROOM IS A PROTECTED SAFE PLACE FOR ALL GENDER IDENTITIES.
I like this statement because it acknowledges the physical safe space of the classroom. Not only does it designate the space as safe, but as "protected" -- to signify that those who have power in that space are ensuring that it stays that way.
By placing this statement on the walls, I am making explicitly clear what my expectations are of my students. When they are in my classroom, they will not engage in negative behaviour toward each other.
