I found this article about "The World's First Gay Doll" and it prompted me to consider the implications of creating toys (or any other product, for that matter) that are specifically targeted at LGBTQ individuals. Is this any different from creating products that are targeted specifically towards a certain gender? Should the LGBTQ community feel proud that they have representation in the toy industry, or angry that their identity has been commodified and stereotyped in such an overt way?
Reading portions of this article in class could serve to open up a class discussion about gender roles, and how students in the class feel they see themselves represented (or not) in the media they consume on a daily basis.
